WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

BRIAN MILLER – GII ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR 2017

Goodwill® Industries of Arkansas’s mission is to change lives through education, training and employment. Read this inspiring story of how Goodwill’s mission impacted the life of Brian Miller and his family forever.

When he was just three years old, Miller’s father left. His grandmother became his guardian when he was seven years old. In his late teens, he began using and selling drugs, and he had several run-ins with the law in his 20s. After he was caught in a raid at a drug house in his 30s, he was convicted of drug trafficking charges, and was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison.

Brian became determined to turn his life around because his felony hampered his ability to provide for his family. Once released from prison he visited Goodwill Industries of Arkansas and applied to participate in the Transitional Employment Opportunity (TEO) program. He soon began the 16-week, paid job-training program, earning a career readiness certificate and enhancing his leadership skills.

His hard work didn’t go unnoticed. After completing the program, Miller was offered a position at Goodwill, which he gladly accepted. After obtaining certification as a forklift driver, he worked relentlessly and was quickly promoted. His strong work ethic in the production area led to increased efficiency, accountability and profitability, and he received two additional promotions. Today, as a production supervisor, Miller is coaching new TEO participants who are working in the production area as part of their job readiness program. He also acts as a mentor for others going through the program and has mentored hundreds of participants during his tenure.

Because of his determination and leadership abilities, Goodwill Industries International awarded Miller as its 2017 Achiever of the Year. We are so proud of how far he has come and all the accomplishments he has made along the way.

Brian is just one example of how your donations to Goodwill change lives! Last year, Goodwill placed more than 4,500 Arkansans in jobs in various industries throughout the state. All made possible thanks to your generosity in supporting our organization through donating and shopping. Thank you! Because of you, Good Will Happen.
